Slay the Comparisonitis Dragon: Why Comparing Yourself to Others is Killing Your Business Mojo

Jul 11, 2024
Let’s talk about that sneaky beast called comparisonitis.

Have you ever found yourself doom scrolling through social media, wondering how all these beautifully curated profiles and businesses seem to have it all together while you’re sitting in bed with disheveled hair, scrolling through social media, wishing your coffee could magically appear on your bedside table? ☕✨

Picture this: Its 4am and I can't sleep and I make the fatal mistake of reaching for my phone. I come across a post from another fierce woman in the mental health and mindset space, sharing an incredible opportunity she has had to speak in front of other women talking about how your mindset can affect your success and I find myself deep diving into her profile, analysing everything she is doing right now and suddenly its 7am and I am starting my day filled with anxiety, my confidence is taking a beating and I am questioning every decision I have made in my business. (mindset really does affect success).

That, my friends is comparisonitis in action!

What you don't realise about comparisonitis is:

It often strikes unexpectedly, turning a casual social media check into a spiral doom scroll that could last hours.

It can lead to lost productivity

It negatively impacts on self esteem and confidence.

It can make us question our own path or even worse, it can make us change our path and suddenly we find ourselves trying to please everyone else and be everything to everyone and completely burning ourselves out before we have actually even started.

For the longest time, I kept thinking to myself, “I’m never going to be like these other women. I can’t do what they do or be who they are.” In other words, I was telling myself, “I can’t be successful.”

WRONG.

I had to stop. It was killing my passion, It was killing my business and it was seriously killing me slowly inside. I was lost deep down inside my doom scrolling.

What I needed to tell myself was "I don't want to be them, I want to join them"

Why Playing the Comparison Game is Holding You Back:

1. You Don’t Know Their Backstory That "overnight success" you admire might actually be on year 10 of their journey. What you see is the polished end result, not the years of hard work, failures, and persistence it took to get there.

2. Resources Remain a Mystery Behind those perfect profiles, there might be a huge team, a massive budget, or a giant email list you don’t see. Comparing your solo efforts to their resources is not just unfair—it’s misleading.

3. Strategy Mismatch Their business approach might be completely wrong for you and your unique goals. What works for them may not necessarily work for you, and that’s okay. Your journey is your own.

4. Appearances Can Be Deceiving A polished social media presence doesn’t always equal profitability or fulfillment. Success isn’t always about looking the part; it’s about building a business that works for you and brings you joy.

Embrace Your Unique Journey

You are uniquely you. You can’t—and shouldn’t—be like someone else. What you can do is craft your own business strategy, show up every day, and remain consistent. As much as we’d love for coffee to magically appear on our bedside tables, if you stay under the covers, you’re never going to move the needle on your business.

So, when you find yourself lying in bed, messy hair and all, starting to compare yourself to others, just remember: someday, someone might be comparing themselves to you. Then you can confidently say, “I was my authentic self, and the only person I compared myself to was that fierce woman in the mirror, messy hair and all!”

Conclusion

Slay that comparisonitis dragon and embrace your own path. You have what it takes to succeed, and your journey is uniquely your own. Keep showing up, stay consistent, and let your authentic self shine. The world needs your unique brilliance!

Stay fierce and keep slaying! 💪🔥
